Burleigh’s brunch scene is one of the strongest on the Gold Coast. Most of the best cafes are clustered along James Street and the surrounding precinct, all within walking distance of 2nd Avenue Apartments. We’ve put this guide together for guests staying with us. These are the cafes we send people to most often, with timing notes for the busier ones.

Weekends are busy, especially at the headline names. A bit of planning goes a long way, and the smaller details (when to go, where to sit, what to order) often matter more than the choice of venue itself. The tips below are the ones we’d give a friend visiting Burleigh for the first time.

Paddock Bakery

Paddock is widely considered the best bakery on the Gold Coast. The croissants and laminated pastries are excellent, and the sourdough is some of the best you’ll find in Queensland. The coffee programme is taken just as seriously as the bakery side.

A queue forms down the street on weekend mornings, so plan ahead. For a quieter sit-down, weekday mornings are easier. Bakery items sell out as the morning progresses, so earlier is better regardless of which day you go.

Canteen

Canteen on James Street is the kind of all-day cafe you end up returning to. Seasonal menu, local sourcing where local is the point, and cooking that treats the ingredients with care. The room is comfortable and unhurried; regulars settle in for long mornings, and newcomers benefit from the relaxed pace.

The brunch menu runs into the early afternoon, which is useful on the days you start a bit later than planned.

Commune

Commune is a bright corner cafe with a health-leaning menu: grain bowls, big breakfast plates with regional produce, smoothies that taste like fruit, and coffee that’s taken seriously. A good choice when one person in the group wants to keep things on the lighter side. Staff are unhurried, the room is bright, and the menu reads honestly. The mushroom toast and the acai bowls are both consistently good.

Tarte Bakery and Cafe

Tarte makes French-influenced pastries with proper care. The croissants are properly buttery, and the tart case changes daily, so it’s worth scanning what’s available rather than ordering from memory. A short walk from the apartment, and a good option for a quick coffee-and-pastry stop on the way to the beach.

Haven at Mondrian Gold Coast

Haven is the dining venue at the Mondrian Gold Coast, a short walk down the Esplanade. More polished than most options in the precinct, with a beachfront setting and direct access to Burleigh Heads beach. The brunch menu is broad enough to justify the slightly higher price point, and the outdoor seating is the strongest view on this list. Worth booking on weekends; walk-ins fill up faster than the room suggests.

Maman Bar and Kitchen

Maman is a French-leaning cafe and bar that handles the mid-morning slot well, sitting somewhere between breakfast and lunch, with a menu that doesn’t force you to commit to either. The pace is calm even when the room is full, and the coffee-and-something pairing here is one of our quieter recommendations for guests who want a slower morning.

Social Brew Cafe

Social Brew is the neighbourhood cafe that handles the weekday crowd and the secondary weekend wave once Paddock’s queue forms. Coffee is consistently good, the menu is competent across the brunch range, and the atmosphere is easy and unfussy. The kind of place you end up at twice in a week without thinking about it.

How to plan a brunch weekend in Burleigh

If you’re staying with us for a few days and want to work through a few of these, here’s how we’d suggest spacing it out:

  • Head to Paddock first thing on a weekday (around 7am Wednesday is a good window) for the best chance of avoiding the queue.
  • Save the long Saturday for somewhere with table service like Canteen or Haven, where the wait is for food, not for a seat.
  • Use Social Brew or Commune for a casual morning when you don’t want to commit to anything elaborate.
  • Keep one slot open for whichever new place has opened recently. Burleigh’s brunch list refreshes often, and the newcomers tend to earn attention quickly.

A few practical tips for guests staying with us

A few extra notes that often help when planning your mornings:

  • Walking distances. Most of the cafes on this list are 5-10 minutes on foot from the apartment. Maman and Paddock are at the further end (closer to 10-12 minutes); Tarte and Haven are closest. The walk into the James Street precinct is flat and shaded most of the way.
  • Pair with the headland. A good Burleigh morning is brunch first, then the Burleigh Headland walk. The walk takes about 45 minutes round-trip from the start of the trail, and the views back toward the apartment from the lookout are some of the best on this stretch of coast. Bring water and sun protection regardless of season.
  • Beach access combos. If you want a swim before brunch, Burleigh main beach is patrolled and a five-minute walk down. The cafes along the Esplanade (Haven, Tarte) are easiest to reach in damp swimwear; the James Street places are better after a quick change at the apartment.
  • Coffee on the run. If you’d rather not wait, most of these cafes do excellent takeaway coffee. Pair with a pastry from Paddock or Tarte and you’ve got a full breakfast you can take down to the headland or the beach.
