Do you know about the BLEACH* Festival? If you value the arts on their whole, you should not miss the 2022 version of this historic event.

BLEACH* is one of Australia’s best and most exciting site-specific contemporary art events. The festival, which Placemakers* Gold Coast runs, recognises the most avant-garde and risk-taking local artists. The 11-day contemporary arts festival features intimate music series, compelling storytelling, performance art, and visual exhibitions.

BLEACH* 2022 will take place from August 11 to August 21 at seven different locales, including North Burleigh Heads, Miami, the Gold Coast Botanical Gardens, Burleigh Brewing, HOTA, and Miami Marketta, and Mudgeeraba.

As previously indicated, many free and ticketed events are happening throughout the festival. Here are just a few of them you can attend.

First Light

On August 11 at 6 AM, assemble at the North Burleigh Hub at Ed Hardy Park in The Esplanade to celebrate the start of the eleventh BLEACH* Festival. Let the ethereal tones of strong Yalanji woman Deline Briscoe take you back in time as the ceremonial smoke ascends into the early-morning sky.

The Yugambeh Aboriginal Dancers, the Yugambeh Youth Choir, and the local Traditional Owner Lann Levinge assemble to celebrate this alchemical moment where the ancient and modern clash via dance, fire, and song. As the sun rises over the ocean, be there to share in this incredibly spectacular moment.

Feast at BLEACH*

Enjoy a dining experience unlike any other on August 12 at the North Burleigh Hub. Discover the oldest flavours in the world as you travel through time with a First Nation Chef.

A dedicated Quandamooka and Kullilli man, Kieron Anderson, aka “The Quandamooka Chef” of Yalabin Dining, offers a delectable cuisine utilising sacred native flavours. Your appetite will be satisfied by a carefully crafted menu that features native bush foods alongside locally produced produce. You will also discover the cuisine, traditions, and profound spiritual connection of the oldest living society on Earth.

Home Grown Opera

Experience the enchantment of opera at a concert featuring traditional songs commemorating significant times in life, performed by BLEACH* and Opera Queensland, at the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens.

This evening promises to be moving and unforgettable for the whole family, featuring new arrangements by composer John Rotar and performances by some of Queensland’s best opera singers and musicians. Bring a blanket and a picnic for a memorable night of music under the stars with your friends. Home Grown Opera runs from August 11 to 13.

Volo: Dreams of Flight

Enter the wonderful world of Volo: Dreams of Flight, a thrilling virtual reality adventure inspired by Leonardo da Vinci. You can instantly transform into one of four flying machines while on a playground swing by donning a VR headset. Catch Volo: Dreams of Flight from August 11 to 14 and August 18 to 21 at the North Burleigh Hub.

BLEACH* Artists Pop Up at HOTA Gallery

Head to HOTA Gallery to check out the varied work of a selected group of BLEACH* Festival artists who responded to the pieces on display at Australia’s Playground.

This exhibition, which spans the previous 100 years, is grounded in place and traces the development of the Gold Coast from a little coastal town to a modern-day city. Bring the family to the gallery for an engaging, entertaining, and cost-free afternoon of modern art at HOTA, Home of the Arts, on August 20.

The 11-day annual contemporary arts festival features a wide range of activities and events, and these are just a few. Do you want to go to every one of them? You can do that if you reserve a room at 2nd Avenue.
